SAP Ignite: What has been your story of getting into SAP ABAP after graduating from your college?

Pushkar: After graduating from my college I did my ABAP certification from Delphi Pune where I got a chance to interact and learn from experienced MM and SD Folks during my training. Post my certification I got to know about Kansai Nerolac Paints through one of my friends who left the organization. I was selected by a Walk-in Drive for Fresher in Mumbai. I think Certification is a must for a fresher if you want to crack into ABAP.

SAP Ignite: You have been a regular reader of Sapignite. How has Sapignite helped you to give an extra edge to your ABAP Skill ?

Pushkar: I landed up on SAP Ignite when I was preparing for ABAP Certification. It has loads of useful content which helped me to clear my ABAP certification. SAP Ignite is very interactive. It feels like it’s talking to you. I am still excited for any new post published in SAP Ignite

SAP Ignite: You have implemented features like Virus Scanner and OCR with Java Integration. Tell us more about this.

Pushkar : OCR with Java Integration: My organization was looking for Auto Invoice Verification using OCR technology. The Invoice verification performed was more of manual and time-consuming. We needed to develop something which would extract dates and other values from an Invoice using OCR scan and custom ABAP program which verifies the data from the SAP system. There was no help in SDN on this. I started learning OCR by downloading OCR SDK and exploring demos and then learned Eclipse for integrating Java and ABAP using SAP Jco connections. We proposed a third party tool for scanning. The scanned image url was sent to the Java system which extracts dates and other values and returns values in a string which is used as input of Custom ABAP program for verification.Virus Scanner: We had Enterprise Portal(EP) and Knowledge management(KM) integration and there was a need for Virus scanning of the document while uploading it in EP. We had developed Adapters using Visual Admin in EP which involved primarily Java Coding.

SAP Ignite:  What sort of skills should an ABAPer develop? What would be your message to all young ABAPers.

Pushkar: Pure Vanilla ABAP is of not much use. You should add flavours like BI, HR, CRM, PI  etc. You should aim to become a Techno Functional.Don’t limit yourself to one technology; keep exploring new technologies in SAP. Try to become a jack of trade of all master of one. This will help you to give quality solutions. Try to learn the Business and Technology. Explore all possible ways of solving an issue.

SAP Ignite: Things which miss don’t miss on a day.
